SOMALI DIASPORA – UK

The SDUK is an independently non-profit organisation representing and advocating for the Somali Diaspora in the UK.

We also aim to promote participation and integration of members of Somali Diaspora in UK in all level of British society and in various development needs of their home country

We believe that members of Somali Diaspora would achieve their potentials by actively integrating fully in their host country. We also believe that have gained valuable skills, experiences and expertise that would be important in contributing in creating a sustainable peaceful, prosperous Somalia.

Our methodology

Our methodology is based on using historical, cultural, social and language sensitivity approach in our service provision which is underpinned by in-depth knowledge of our area of work and by working with members of Somali Diaspora in UK at all levels of our service provision, where necessary from the need analysis, project planning, project delivery, project monitoring to project evaluation phases.


OUR PROGRAMMES


Diaspora participation in development

This programme uses our insight of Somalia Diaspora community and our database of professionals in various areas within Somali Diaspora in UK and links them with various developments needs of Somalia in collaborations with various stakeholders at local, national and international levels.

Our actions under this programme are:
- Raising awareness of various development needs through workshops and seminars.
- Provision of advice and guidance on development various development projects.
- Provision of various training to members of diaspora in order to prepare them to be effective in their development participation ventures or initiatives.

Diaspora Voice

This programme is guided by findings of our regular consultations with members of Somali Diaspora in UK and our in-depth knowledge of their needs, issues and challenges. We based on this information to become their voices and advocates in order to create platforms that would strengthen Somali Diaspora in UK relating outcomes of various stakeholders from different area of expertise, authorities, area of interests.

Our actions under this programme are:
- Promoting the needs of diaspora through meetings with relevant authorities and publications.

Civil society and political participation development

This programme uses our knowledge of dynamics of political and civil society environment in Somalia and participation needs and creates platforms that facilitate members of Somali diaspora in UK to participate at different level of civil society and political activities in Somalia other in order to strengthen outcomes of political and civil society actions in Somalia.

Our actions under this programme are:
- Provision of advice and guidance to members of diaspora on participating in civil society.
- Provision of discussions and debates platforms to members of Somali Diaspora on various political issues of Somalia.
- Provision of support to develop diaspora based civil society focusing on development of Somalia.
- Facilitating participation of members of Somali diaspora in UK at various political and civil society levels in Somalia. This is done through advice, guidance, support, information provision, seminars and conferences.

Partnership and collaboration development

This programme uses our in-depth knowledge Somalia humanitarian and conflict challenges to create platforms that facilitate various stakeholders from different backgrounds, area of expertise and area of interest to bring their plans, strategies and service delivery together, learn from each other in order to strengthen outcomes in their various areas of interventions.

Our services under this programme are:
- Facilitating good practice and learning sharing in various area of Somalia development area. This is done through network meeting, seminars and conferences.
- Facilitating partnerships and collaborations of various actors in various area of development of Somalia.

Peace Building programme

This programme in rooted in our understanding of local ethnical, tribal, geographical, economical and political dynamics that have caused or have the potentiality to cause conflicts and insecurity. We use this information in order to facilitate member of Somali Diaspora and other stakeholders to participate in various peace building initiatives.

Our services under this programme are:
- Facilitating conflict resolutions negotiations
- Facilitation of conflict prevention
- Facilitate members of diasporas participation in various peace building, conflict resolutions initiatives
- Provisions of security advice and intelligence

Languages, cultural and integration promotion

This programme uses our cultural and language sensitivity knowledge in order to provide various and appropriate cultural, language and communications solutions for members of Somali Diaspora various stakeholders. The programme also aims to facilitate and promote integration of members of Somali Diaspora in different level of lives in UK.

Our actions under this programme are:
- Provision of interpreting and translation services
- Provision of advice and guidance in development of promotion materials for development, Humanitarian and peace building initiatives
- Cross-cultural communication strategies advice
- Somali languages classes for diaspora
- Somali cultural promotion and events
- Facilitate cultural exchanges with other communities
- Raise awareness of different participations opportunities in UK and how to access them.
